Cheera Thoran

Stir fried side dish made from red spinach in Kerala


  • 2 cups Cheera/ red spinach-chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 tablespoons coconut grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cumin powder
  • 1 pinch Turmeric powder
  • Curry leaves- few
  • 1 Onion small, chopped
  • 2 Green chili, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garlic, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • Oil


  1. Heat oil. Splutter mustard seeds. Fry garlic, chillies, onion and curry leaves till onions are translucent.
  2. Add turmeric powder and cumin powder. Mix well.
  3. Add chopped cheera. Stir.
  4. Adjust taste with salt. Cook until dry.
  5. Add grated coconut. Mix. Cook for few minutes.
  6. Serve Cheera Thoran hot with rice.
